Canton Fair Conclusions

Here is the press release put out by the PRC’s Ministry of Commerce on the recently concluded Canton Fair:

On April 19, the first phase of the 107th Canton Fair concluded successfully, which achieved slight growth on both the number of overseas buyers and trade volume. However, the growth is still lower than that in the 103rd Canton Fair held before the financial crisis.

The overseas buyers present at the Canton Fair amounted to 104,000, up by 13.3% compared with that in 106th Canton Fair and down by 2.5% compared with that in the 103rd Canton Fair in 2008. Buyers from the EU, the U.S. and Japan reached 20,000, down by 3.5% and 22.4% respectively compared with that in 106th and 103rd Canton Fair.

The export value in the first phase amounted to USD17.1 billion, up by 9.8% compared with that in 106th Canton Fair while down by 19.3% compared with that in the 103rd Canton Fair. The trade value with traditional markets such as Europe, US and Japan declined by 31.7%.

According to the statistics of the Phase I, enterprises widely acknowledged that, currently, our export was still facing with many unsteady and uncertain factors. But they also expressed their discretion and optimism on future development.
